Life Lessons

I have noticed that "What makes us happy?" seems to be a very popular and enduring question.

Via David Brooks, we find this fascinating profile of a research project that promises to reveal the secrets of happiness.

Starting in the 1930’s, researchers followed 268 men from the time they entered college to old age and beyond. It is one of the most comprehensive longitudinal studies every completed and, as far as I can tell, it proves once and for all that being born with access to money is always a wise first step.

Also, taking a class at MoMA might prove to be fun.

The Weather Outside is Frightful

New York City public schools are closed today due to snow and wind conditions. Department of Education offices are open.

Freelancers and part-timers probably won't get paid for today's canceled arts workshops.

Maybe they will be rescheduled.

Maybe not.

The Staten Island Advance reports that as non-profits cut back, some non-profit executives are being asked to defend their perks. An article dated February 22nd says:

While budgets have been slashed at some of the borough's cultural and nonprofit organizations, honchos at some of the groups are living the luxe life, enjoying expense accounts and car allowances on top of six-figure salaries.

Also: Flavorpill posts an online guide to free cultural events in New York City, which is obviously one of the most expensive cities for an artist to live in. So why do I stay?

Take the Special

The NYC DOE Office of the Arts and Special Projects (OASP) is charged with supporting universal access to arts education through ArtsCount, an initiative that tracks and reports student participation in arts education and holds schools accountable for meeting New York State Instructional Requirements for the Arts. OASP also put together all of those nifty Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. Arts Count has identified "Arts Education Liasons" in most of the NYC public schools and painstakingly typed their names in tiny print on this spreadsheet. For the list to be of any use, you'll need the school number and a magnifying glass.

We TAs should probably read all of this stuff if we want to be taken seriously by friends like these.
